TZANEEN – South African Police Service officers in Tzaneen have arrested one male suspect and recovered a vehicle after a group of individuals stole avocados from a farm in the Magoebaskloof area.
The incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday, June 02. According to police reports, the suspects gained unauthorized entry to the farm property at approximately 18:57 on Monday evening. They harvested and loaded 13 bags, each weighing 80 kilograms, of avocados into a vehicle. The group attempted to leave the premises at around 02:52 on Tuesday morning.
Security personnel from the Canine Security unit intercepted the suspects’ vehicle on a two-spoor farm road. While attempting to evade the security officers, the driver swerved to the right, lost control of the vehicle, and drove into a nearby river.
After the vehicle entered the river, two suspects who had been involved in loading the produce fled into the surrounding bushes. Two other suspects crawled out of the submerged vehicle and also escaped into the thick vegetation.
Subsequent information indicated that two of the suspects emerged from the bushes and obtained a ride hitchhiking towards Tzaneen town. Security forces tracked the vehicle carrying the suspects. When the suspects noticed the marked security vehicles, they jumped out and fled on foot. A chase followed, during which one male suspect was apprehended.
The Tzaneen SAPS responded to the scene. The arrested suspect was officially detained, and both the vehicle and the stolen avocados were recovered.
Police have launched a manhunt for the remaining three suspects. The arrested suspect is expected to appear in court soon on charges relating to the theft of agricultural produce.
Investigations by the South African Police Service remain ongoing.
