A nine-year-old girl from Eastridge in Mitchells Plain has died after she was allegedly struck by a wheel that came off a BMW during an unauthorised spinning event in Atlantis, Cape Town.

The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday, 10 October 2026, when the child was watching the vehicle activity. She sustained a serious head injury and was taken to a Netcare hospital for specialised emergency treatment.

Community reports indicated that the girl was subsequently declared brain dead before her death was confirmed. Her identity has not been publicly disclosed in the available reports.

Police Reporting Questions Emerge After Child’s Death

The circumstances surrounding the incident have raised questions about whether the matter was formally reported to the police and when authorities were notified.

Atlantis ward councillor Allister Lightburn said he had only recently become aware of the incident. He expressed condolences to the child’s family and said he was working with traffic services and law enforcement to prevent similar tragedies.

Lightburn indicated that he had been informed that a case was opened at the Atlantis police station. However, Atlantis SAPS spokesperson Captain Liza Munro said the incident had not been reported at that station.

Munro indicated that the family might have approached another police station.

The discrepancy has highlighted the importance of establishing where and when the incident was formally reported, as well as ensuring that the circumstances surrounding the child’s death are properly investigated.

Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, said reports indicated that the South African Police Service was investigating the death.

The precise circumstances of the incident, including how the wheel became detached and who was responsible for the vehicle, have not been fully established in the available reports.

Councillor Raises Concerns About Previous Incidents

Lightburn also raised concerns about the safety risks associated with spinning events in Atlantis, saying another incident linked to one of these gatherings had previously left a man with an amputated leg.

He said he was working with relevant enforcement authorities to address the problem and prevent further incidents.

Lightburn also indicated that he was not opposed to car spinning as an activity in itself, provided it was conducted legally and with appropriate safety measures in place.

The latest fatal incident has renewed concerns about spectators being exposed to moving vehicles during events where proper safety controls may be absent.

When vehicles perform spinning manoeuvres, including rapid turns and doughnuts, spectators can be exposed to significant risks if they stand too close to the vehicles or if the activity takes place in an uncontrolled area.

The reported detachment of a wheel in this incident also raises questions about vehicle condition, mechanical safety and the precautions taken to protect people watching the event. These matters would need to be established through an investigation rather than assumed.

## City Takes Action Against Dangerous Driving

The incident occurred during a weekend in which City of Cape Town enforcement officers also dealt with other cases involving spinning and street racing.

Near Ottery Hypermarket, officers reportedly observed a blue BMW performing doughnuts at an intersection. The vehicle was impounded after it was found to be unlicensed, modified and unroadworthy, and its driver was fined.

Separate incidents involving modified vehicles were also reported on Upper Kloofnek Road in Cape Town’s central business district. In one incident, a BMW driver attempting to drift around a corner collided with a MyCiTi bus.

Although these incidents were separate from the fatal occurrence in Atlantis, they have added to concerns about dangerous vehicle manoeuvres being performed on public roads and in areas where other road users or spectators may be exposed to danger.

Investigation Into Girl’s Death

The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances leading to the child’s fatal injuries, including how the wheel became detached and the events that followed.

Police reporting procedures have also come under scrutiny, with the Atlantis police station confirming that the incident had not been reported there, despite the councillor having received information that a case had been opened.

The available reports do not establish whether the vehicle’s driver has been identified, whether anyone has been arrested or whether criminal charges have been laid.

Authorities have also not publicly established whether mechanical failure, vehicle modifications or another factor caused the wheel to come off.

The girl’s death has placed renewed attention on the need for effective enforcement against unauthorised spinning events and adequate measures to protect spectators from moving vehicles.

The family is mourning the loss of a nine-year-old child following an incident that reportedly began during a car-spinning gathering in Atlantis. The investigation will need to establish the full circumstances of her death and determine whether anyone should be held legally responsible.
