A group of men were reportedly found asleep inside a white Opel Corsa bakkie after emergency services returned to the scene of an earlier collision involving the vehicle and a minibus taxi in Durban on Saturday afternoon, 31 October 2026.
The incident occurred at the intersection of Old North Coast Road and North Coast Road, where KZN VIP Emergency Medical Services, Metro Police and other emergency response teams were initially dispatched following reports of a collision.
According to information from the scene, the white Opel Corsa bakkie, which was carrying several men, had collided with a minibus taxi.
The occupants of the bakkie were suspected of being under the influence of alcohol. They allegedly became aggressive towards Metro Police officers who attended the initial collision.
Emergency medical personnel subsequently left the scene after responding to the incident.
However, crews received another request for assistance reporting a collision at the same intersection. When KZN VIP medics returned, they reportedly discovered the same Opel Corsa bakkie stationary in the roadway.
The occupants were apparently asleep inside the vehicle when emergency personnel arrived.
Alcohol bottles were also reportedly observed inside the bakkie, further raising concerns about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
It could not be established whether the vehicle had been involved in another collision or what had happened between the initial response and the second call for assistance.
The bakkie’s position in the roadway created a potential danger for other motorists travelling through the busy intersection.
At the time of the report, details regarding possible arrests, enforcement action against the occupants or arrangements to remove the vehicle had not been confirmed.
The incident highlights the dangers associated with suspected alcohol-impaired driving, particularly when drivers and passengers remain on public roads following a collision.
Motorists were urged to approach the intersection with caution and remain alert to the obstruction.
