Durban, KwaZulu-Natal – Police and private security units are actively seeking a 28-year-old Malawian national following the reported theft of jewellery and cash from a residential property in Durban on Sunday, 12 July 2026.
The suspect has been identified as Fatima Lawerence, who is also known to use the name Esther, as indicated on her passport. She is believed to be travelling with her five-year-old daughter. Lawerence had been employed as a domestic worker at the residence for approximately seven years prior to the incident.
According to reports from the employer, the theft was discovered upon their return to the home at around 17:30 on Sunday. Items taken include a collection of old gold jewellery, notably several Kruger coins, with the total value of the jewellery estimated at approximately R1 million. An additional R10,000 in cash was also reported missing. The jewellery holds substantial sentimental value, having been passed down through multiple generations within the family.
Authorities believe Lawerence may be attempting to leave South Africa and return to Malawi. Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) has issued a public appeal for information regarding her whereabouts. Members of the public are urged to contact RUSA immediately on 086 1234 333 if they have any relevant details.
The case has drawn attention in local media and online platforms, highlighting concerns around long-term employment relationships in domestic work and cross-border movements following such incidents. As of Monday, 13 July 2026, no arrests have been reported, and investigations continue in coordination with relevant law enforcement agencies.
This incident underscores the vulnerability of valuable family heirlooms in private homes and the importance of vigilance in reporting suspicious activities promptly. Updates on the investigation will be monitored as more details emerge from official channels.
