On Monday, 29 June 2026, a cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery targeted a Fidelity Services armoured vehicle in Gugulethu, Cape Town. The incident occurred near the Gugulethu sports complex along NY1 (Steve Biko Drive).

Reports indicate that armed suspects attacked the Fidelity CIT truck in the evening. Emergency services, including police and security personnel, responded to the scene. The robbery involved gunfire, consistent with descriptions of a shooting robbery.

Following the attack, members of the public gathered at the scene. Video footage from the area shows crowds of people in the streets under streetlights at night, with individuals bending down to pick up scattered items from the road and verges. Debris and what appear to be cash or related materials are visible on the ground as people move around the site.

The robbery took place in a busy township area close to local landmarks, including the sports complex and nearby shops. Authorities advised the public to avoid the vicinity while operations were underway. No immediate official statements detail the amount of cash involved, whether the suspects escaped with significant sums, or any injuries to security personnel or bystanders.

Fidelity Services operates armoured cash transportation across South Africa, handling deliveries and ATM servicing. CIT robberies remain a persistent challenge in the country, often involving coordinated armed groups targeting vehicles in transit. This incident in Gugulethu follows a pattern seen in previous Cape Town area heists, though each event is investigated independently.

Police presence was noted at the scene with multiple services active. Investigations would typically focus on recovering any stolen cash, identifying suspects through witness accounts, CCTV if available in the area, and forensic evidence. At the time of reporting, no arrests had been publicly confirmed in connection with this specific robbery.

Local residents and commuters experienced disruption in the area. Steve Biko Drive and surrounding roads saw activity from emergency responders and crowds. The incident highlights ongoing security concerns for cash transit operations in densely populated urban townships.

Further details, including any confirmed casualties, the precise value of cash targeted or taken, and suspect descriptions, are expected as the South African Police Service (SAPS) releases updates. Fidelity Services has not issued a detailed public statement in the immediate hours following the event.

This robbery adds to the tally of CIT incidents in the Western Cape. Authorities continue to urge anyone with information to come forward to assist the investigation. Public safety in the immediate aftermath focused on clearing the scene and restoring normal traffic flow in the affected part of Gugulethu.

WATCH: Young boy shot dead by Nigerian shop owner in Hillbrow resulting in the looting of his shop and his vehicle being torched.

In Hillbrow, a densely populated inner-city suburb of Johannesburg known for its high levels of crime and diverse immigrant communities, a young boy was fatally shot, allegedly by the owner of a shop operated by a Nigerian national.

According to eyewitness accounts and video footage circulating on social media, the incident triggered immediate unrest. Protesters gathered at the scene, looted goods from the shop involved, and set the shop owner’s vehicle alight. Videos from the area show a silver sedan engulfed in flames amid scattered debris on a paved street, with thick black smoke rising and a crowd of onlookers present. Some individuals are seen moving around the burning vehicle as emergency or security vehicles appear in the background.

Hillbrow has long experienced tensions between local residents and foreign nationals, particularly those operating small businesses such as spaza shops and retail outlets. Foreign-owned shops in the area have been targets during periods of unrest linked to economic pressures, crime concerns, and anti-immigrant sentiment. Past incidents in Hillbrow and surrounding Johannesburg areas have involved looting and burning of businesses owned by Nigerians and other African migrants.

The precise circumstances of the shooting remain unconfirmed by official authorities in available reports. Details such as the boy’s age, the exact motive or altercation leading to the shooting, and the shop owner’s account have not been publicly detailed as of June 30, 2026. The event appears to have been rapidly shared via local news pages and social media platforms.

This latest incident occurs against a backdrop of broader concerns in South Africa about crime, undocumented migration, and xenophobic violence. Johannesburg’s inner city, including Hillbrow and nearby Berea, has seen repeated protests and operations targeting illegal immigration and associated criminal activities. Anti-foreigner groups have at times issued ultimatums, contributing to heightened tensions.

South African Police Service responses to such events typically involve opening murder dockets, investigating the shooting, and deploying public order units to contain unrest and prevent further property damage or violence. No arrests or official statements specifically addressing this Hillbrow case were immediately available in public reports.

The death of the young boy and the subsequent retaliation highlight ongoing challenges in managing community relations, business operations in high-crime areas, and rapid escalation of disputes in Johannesburg’s inner city. Local residents and business owners in Hillbrow often cite issues with theft, drug-related crime, and competition as flashpoints, while foreign traders point to vulnerability to mob violence and inadequate policing.

Further details are expected as police investigations proceed and more witnesses come forward. The incident underscores the fragile social dynamics in parts of Johannesburg where economic survival, crime, and demographic diversity intersect.

Update on Shooting of Senior Crime Intelligence Officer Major General Feroz Khan: Handwritten Note Recovered at Scene

Johannesburg, South Africa – Investigators have recovered a handwritten note from the scene of the shooting of Major General Feroz Khan, the suspended deputy head of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Intelligence division, in Houghton on Sunday night, 28 June 2026.

The note, now part of the evidence in the high-level investigation, allegedly calls for a criminal case to be opened against Colonel Khoromi and General Khumalo. It reportedly requests that the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) probe the matter, specifically referencing issues such as defeating the ends of justice or contempt of court.

Khan was shot in Third Avenue, Houghton, shortly after 11 pm while driving a grey Suzuki Baleno. He sustained gunshot wounds and was taken to Netcare Milpark Hospital, where he remains in critical condition following emergency procedures. Reports indicate he had just left a meeting with his legal team prior to the incident.

Police have described the attack as a targeted assassination attempt. A specialized team comprising the Gauteng Hawks, Gauteng Crime Intelligence, the SAPS Detective Service, and the Political Killings Task Team is leading the probe. Ballistics experts were on scene, and 9mm cartridges were reportedly recovered. Some reports note questions around the absence of visible bullet holes in the vehicle, adding to the details under examination.

The recovery of the note adds a new layer to the investigation. Authorities continue to examine its contents, authorship, and relevance to the shooting. No official confirmation has been provided on whether the note was left by the assailants or otherwise connected to the perpetrators.

Khan had been scheduled to testify before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Wednesday, 1 July 2026. The commission, chaired by retired Constitutional Court Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, is examining alleged criminality, political interference, and corruption in the criminal justice system. Khan’s testimony was anticipated to be significant given prior allegations against him.

In May 2026, the Political Killings Task Team conducted a raid on Khan’s Houghton residence and seized electronic devices. Khan had filed urgent court applications seeking the return of the devices, warning that exposure of sensitive information could endanger lives and operations. He withdrew certain applications, including efforts to limit the commission’s access or testify in camera, leading to the issuance of a summons for his appearance.

Khan joined SAPS in 1991 and advanced through Crime Intelligence roles, including leadership in the Undercover Agent Programme and Operational Intelligence Support. He was promoted to major general. Investigations and commission proceedings have referenced his alleged links to cases involving illicit activities, organized crime, and specific high-profile incidents such as the 2021 Aeroton drug bust.

Police have emphasized that it remains premature to determine any motive for the shooting, including potential connections to the commission or other matters. The investigation is ongoing, with forensic analysis of the scene, the note, and related evidence continuing.

Khan’s condition at Milpark Hospital is being monitored, and further updates on both his health and the probe are expected. This development occurs amid heightened scrutiny of senior officials within the criminal justice system.
