Four suspects have been intercepted during an intelligence-driven operation that reportedly foiled a planned automated teller machine (ATM) bombing, with police recovering an AK-47 rifle, ammunition and a vehicle.

The operation was conducted following intelligence about suspected criminal activity. The interception prevented the alleged plan from proceeding, according to the initial information released about the incident.

AK-47 Rifle and Ammunition Recovered

An AK-47 rifle and ammunition were among the items recovered during the operation. Police also seized a vehicle believed to be connected to the suspected activity.

The recovery of the firearm and ammunition forms part of the investigation into the alleged ATM bombing plot. Investigators will seek to establish the circumstances surrounding the planned crime and determine whether the suspects may be linked to other incidents.

ATM bombings typically involve the use of explosives to force open cash machines and gain access to the money inside. Such incidents can cause extensive damage to ATMs and surrounding property while posing a risk to people in the vicinity.

Four Suspects Intercepted

Four suspects were intercepted during the intelligence-led operation. The available initial information identifies them as suspects in connection with the alleged planned ATM bombing.

Further details regarding their identities, ages, the exact location of the operation and the specific circumstances of their interception have not been independently confirmed.

It is also unclear from the available information whether the suspects have formally been charged, when they are expected to appear in court, or whether investigators are pursuing additional suspects.

Investigation Into Suspected ATM Bombing

The recovered firearm, ammunition and vehicle are expected to form part of the investigation as authorities work to establish the full circumstances of the suspected plot.

The interception highlights the role of intelligence-led policing in identifying suspected criminal activity before it can be carried out. However, the precise intelligence that led to the operation and the extent of the alleged plan have not been detailed in the information available.

The suspects’ alleged involvement remains subject to the ongoing legal process, and any charges or further developments will need to be confirmed by the relevant authorities.

Nahoon Beach Remains Closed After Another Shark Sighting in KuGompo City

Nahoon Beach in KuGompo City, formerly known as East London, remains closed to the public following another shark sighting near the shore on Sunday morning, 25 October 2026.

The latest sighting comes just days after a 65-year-old woman, identified as Janine Lochrenberg, died following a shark attack at Orient Beach on Tuesday, 20 October.

Nahoon Beach was initially closed on Saturday after a shark was spotted swimming close to the shoreline. The beach remains off-limits while the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality continues to prioritise public safety.

Municipal spokesperson Luzuko Buku has urged bathers and beachgoers to stay out of the water until further notice. Members of the public have also been asked to remain vigilant and comply with all instructions issued by beach officials.

The municipality has not announced a reopening date for Nahoon Beach. The public will be informed when a decision has been made to allow beachgoers to return to the water.

Fatal Shark Attack at Orient Beach

The renewed warnings follow the fatal shark attack at Orient Beach on Tuesday morning, 20 October, which claimed the life of 65-year-old Janine Lochrenberg.

Lochrenberg was an experienced open-water swimmer who regularly swam along the KuGompo City coastline. Reports indicated that she was swimming when she got into difficulty and fellow swimmers rushed to assist her.

According to accounts from the incident, she sustained severe shark bites to her thigh and upper arm. Other swimmers helped bring her towards the shore, and attempts were made to save her life. She was pronounced dead following the attack.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa confirmed that police attended the scene and found the woman’s body with open wounds. An inquest was opened at KuGompo SAPS to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.

The attack prompted the municipality to close both Orient Beach and nearby Eastern Beach as a precautionary measure while safety concerns were assessed.

Orient and Eastern Beaches Reopened

Orient Beach and Eastern Beach were subsequently reopened over the weekend following safety assessments.

However, the separate shark sighting at Nahoon Beach has resulted in another temporary beach closure along the same coastline.

The latest incident has renewed concerns about beach safety among swimmers, surfers and other visitors who use the area’s coastal facilities.

The municipality has stressed that beachgoers must respect closure notices and avoid entering the water at Nahoon Beach until officials confirm that it is safe to do so.

No official reopening time has been announced, and the public is advised to follow municipal updates for further information.

Beachgoers are urged not to ignore warning signs or instructions from beach officials while the closure remains in effect.
