Five suspects aged between 34 and 58 have been arrested following a sting operation that allegedly prevented the illegal sale of a live pangolin for R500,000 in White River, Mpumalanga, on Tuesday, 20 October 2026.
The operation was conducted by members of the Hawks’ Nelspruit Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit after they received information about a planned transaction involving the protected animal.
According to Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Magonseni Nkosi, investigators acted on information received from a source and arranged an operation at a scrap metal business in Rocky’s Drift, near White River.
The operation took place at approximately 09:55, when the suspects allegedly intended to sell the pangolin.
The suspects were arrested during the operation, and the live animal was recovered. The proposed sale price was reportedly R500,000.
The arrests form part of efforts by law enforcement authorities to combat the illegal trade in protected wildlife, which poses a serious threat to the survival of vulnerable animal species.
Pangolin Recovered During Operation
Following its recovery, the pangolin was handed over to the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency for further handling and care.
The agency is responsible for wildlife conservation and the management of protected natural resources in the province.
The recovery of the animal prevented the alleged transaction from proceeding, while the arrests allowed investigators to pursue the circumstances surrounding the attempted sale.
Pangolins are distinctive mammals covered in overlapping keratin scales. They are highly sought after in illegal wildlife markets, particularly for their scales and meat, making them frequent targets of poaching and trafficking.
Their vulnerability to illegal exploitation has made the protection of remaining pangolin populations an important concern for conservation authorities.
Investigation Into Alleged Wildlife Trafficking
The five suspects remain accused in connection with the alleged attempted sale. Their arrests do not amount to a conviction, and the allegations will have to be tested through the legal process.
The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the possession of the pangolin, the intended transaction and whether other individuals were involved.
Authorities have not confirmed further details about the suspects’ identities or the precise legal charges in the information currently available.
The operation highlights the role of intelligence-led investigations in identifying suspected wildlife trafficking activities and recovering protected animals before illegal transactions can be completed.
Further details concerning court appearances and the outcome of the investigation had not been confirmed in the available report at the time of publication.
