Five people died and four others were seriously injured in a head-on collision between a light motor vehicle and a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) on the P97 Road between Perdekop and Amersfoort in Mpumalanga on Thursday evening, 25 June 2026.
All five deceased were male and included both drivers and passengers from the two vehicles involved. Three of the fatalities were occupants of the light motor vehicle, all of whom died at the scene. The remaining two fatalities were the driver and a passenger in the SUV.
The four individuals who sustained serious injuries were all occupants of the SUV and were transported to a hospital in Amersfoort for medical treatment.
Mpumalanga Community Safety spokesperson Moeti Mmusi confirmed the details of the crash. Authorities have stated that the exact cause remains under investigation, but reckless and negligent driving has not been ruled out as a contributing factor.
Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, responded to the incident by highlighting the role of human behaviour in road fatalities. Macie described the province’s roads as having become “killing fields” due to such behaviour and appealed to all road users to heed government road safety messages. Macie further called for stronger measures to address reckless driving and extended condolences to the families of the deceased while wishing the injured a full recovery.
This collision adds to ongoing concerns about road safety on routes in the region. No further details on the identities of the victims or specific circumstances leading to the head-on impact, such as speed, overtaking manoeuvres, or road conditions at the time, have been released pending the ongoing investigation. Emergency services responded to the scene, where the vehicles were reported to have collided directly.
Road safety authorities continue to urge motorists to exercise caution, particularly on rural routes like the P97, emphasising adherence to speed limits, avoidance of fatigue, and responsible driving practices to prevent similar tragedies.
