In a distressing incident on Friday evening, 19 June 2026, a 44-year-old woman and her two young children were subjected to a violent home invasion in the Tea Estate area of Inanda, north of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal. The family was held at gunpoint by masked intruders who ransacked their home before making off with valuables and the family’s vehicle.
Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) were dispatched to Jabu Ngcobo Road at approximately 19:23 following reports of the home invasion and vehicle theft. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the 44-year-old victim, who recounted the terrifying ordeal involving her children, aged three and five years old.
The incident unfolded when three masked suspects, one of whom was armed with a handgun, entered the residence through an open dining room door. The intruders immediately held the mother and her young children at gunpoint, instilling fear in the vulnerable family members trapped inside their own home.
During the robbery, the suspects took a television, a wristwatch, and a cellphone. They also forced the woman to transfer R2,900 from her bank account using her banking application on her phone. The thieves then demanded the keys to the family’s silver Peugeot 208, bearing registration number CN22PN-ZN, which was parked outside the property.
After securing the stolen items and vehicle keys, the suspects locked the mother and her two children inside the residence, preventing immediate escape. The family was only able to free themselves later by using a spare key. Thankfully, no physical injuries were reported in the incident.
RUSA officers promptly coordinated with the vehicle’s tracking company in an effort to locate the stolen Peugeot 208. The last known coordinates placed the vehicle in the Hazelmere area of KwaZulu-Natal. However, the tracking device was reportedly compromised, and the vehicle has not been recovered at this stage.
This armed home invasion highlights ongoing concerns regarding crime in the Inanda and surrounding areas of KwaZulu-Natal. The suspects remain at large, and investigations into the matter are continuing. Authorities are appealing for any information that could assist in identifying and apprehending those responsible.
The community in Tea Estate and broader Inanda region continues to grapple with such incidents, underscoring the challenges faced by residents in ensuring the safety of their families. No further details on arrests or additional leads were available immediately following the response.
