EERSTE RIVER, Western Cape — A joint law enforcement operation under Operation Prosper led to the arrest of a Chinese national on Tuesday, 26 May 2026, following the discovery of suspected counterfeit alcohol at a liquor store in Eerste River.
Authorities from the South African Police Service Counterfeit Unit, the Liquor Authority, the South African Revenue Service, and the South African National Defence Force conducted the raid at approximately 10:00 on the premises. The operation targeted suspected illicit trade activities.
During the inspection, officers seized 6,201 litres of various liquor products. The estimated value of the confiscated items stands at R3.5 million. All seized products were booked in as exhibits.
Police believe the stash was intended for export purposes. The suspect, identified as the male shop owner, was arrested at the scene and detained at Kleinvlei SAPS. He is expected to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court for his first court appearance on related charges.
