Rustenburg, North West – A cash-in-transit vehicle was targeted in a coordinated robbery on Friday morning, approximately 7:30am, on Hagia Sophia Street behind Rustenburg Mall.

According to the driver of the armoured cash van, a white Audi sedan deliberately rammed the front of the vehicle, bringing it to a halt. Armed suspects then removed the security officers from the van. Explosives were used to breach the cash compartment.

One security guard, who was a passenger in the van, sustained a gunshot wound to the leg during the incident. No fatalities were reported. The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.

This incident marks the third cash-in-transit robbery reported in the same general area within the past three months. Local authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, with efforts focused on identifying and apprehending those responsible.

The robbery follows a pattern seen in similar operations across parts of South Africa, where vehicles are used to ram or block cash-in-transit vans, followed by the use of firearms and explosives to access the contents. Such attacks often occur in or near urban commercial areas during daytime hours when traffic and activity levels are higher.

Rustenburg, a key mining hub in the North West province, has seen repeated incidents involving cash-in-transit vehicles in recent months. Previous reported cases in the broader Rustenburg area, including incidents in locations such as Old Geelhout Park and along routes like the R104, have involved ramming tactics, multiple suspects, and the use of blocking vehicles.

Police have not yet released details on the number of suspects involved in Friday’s robbery, descriptions beyond the white Audi sedan, or any potential leads. Members of the public in the vicinity of Rustenburg Mall and Hagia Sophia Street were advised to avoid the area while it was treated as an active crime scene, with reports of gunshots and emergency response activity.

Security companies operating cash-in-transit services in the region continue to face significant challenges from organised criminal groups. These operations typically involve careful planning, including the selection of locations with relatively accessible escape routes near commercial zones.

North West police are expected to provide further updates as the investigation progresses. Authorities urge anyone with information related to the incident to come forward through official channels to assist in the probe.

This latest event highlights ongoing concerns regarding the security of cash transportation in high-activity areas of the province. Investigations remain active, and developments will be monitored closely.
