BOKSBURG, GAUTENG — The case involving the deaths of 20-year-old Jessica Rabe and 25-year-old Yudistan Pillay is expected to return to the Boksburg Magistrates’ Court as two men accused in connection with their deaths remain in custody.
Rabe and Pillay were reported missing in July after their families became concerned about their whereabouts. Their disappearance led to an extended search involving relatives, community members, investigators and police.
Their bodies were eventually discovered at a property in Van Dyk Park at the end of August, bringing the missing-person investigation to a tragic conclusion and prompting a murder investigation.
Couple reported missing
Rabe and Pillay were reported missing at Dawn Park Police Station on July 27.
During the search, information emerged indicating that the pair had been moving between areas in and around Boksburg, including Van Dyk Park and Farrar Park. They were also believed to have stayed temporarily at different properties.
Missing-person information was circulated through community networks as relatives and others attempted to establish where the couple had last been seen.
Private investigator Wendy Pascoe also became involved in the search and assisted the families.
Information received during the investigation reportedly included allegations that Rabe had previously been assaulted and that her cellphone had been taken.
The circumstances surrounding those allegations form part of the wider investigation into the events that preceded the couple’s deaths.
Search leads investigators to Van Dyk Park property
A major breakthrough came towards the end of August when information received by investigators pointed them towards a property in Wildevy Crescent, Van Dyk Park.
Police and search-and-rescue personnel were deployed to the property, where a search was conducted.
The search resulted in the discovery of two bodies that had been concealed and partially buried at the property.
The bodies were recovered on August 30 and were later identified by the victims’ next of kin as those of Rabe and Pillay.
At the time of the discovery, investigators were still working to establish the exact circumstances surrounding their deaths, including the cause of death.
The discovery changed the investigation from a missing-person case into a murder investigation.
Two men face serious charges
Two 27-year-old men, Haroon Rashid Adam and Hendrick Swart, have subsequently appeared before the Boksburg Magistrates’ Court.
The accused face charges including premeditated murder, kidnapping, assault and defeating the ends of justice.
The State is opposing bail.
The accused remain legally presumed innocent and have the right to defend themselves against the charges. The allegations against them still have to be tested through the criminal justice process.
The case has already experienced delays during the bail proceedings.
During a September court appearance, Adam’s legal representative informed the court that he was unwell. As a result, the bail proceedings did not proceed as planned and both accused remained in custody.
Bodies discovered after weeks of searching
The discovery of Rabe and Pillay’s bodies followed weeks of uncertainty for their families.
The search involved police, private investigators and members of the community who attempted to establish what had happened to the pair.
The bodies were reportedly concealed beneath the property and wrapped in plastic before being buried.
Forensic investigators and other police personnel were involved in the recovery operation.
The bodies were subsequently taken to a government mortuary as part of the formal identification and post-mortem process.
Investigators have been working to establish how the couple died and what happened between the time they were last seen and the discovery of their bodies.
Questions remain over the couple’s final movements
Although the investigation has resulted in arrests, a number of details surrounding the couple’s final movements remain subject to the police investigation and court process.
Information released during the investigation indicates that Rabe and Pillay had been in different parts of the Boksburg area before their disappearance.
However, the complete timeline of their movements has not been publicly established.
Investigators are expected to rely on evidence gathered from witnesses, forensic examinations, electronic information and other investigative material to establish what happened.
The alleged assault involving Rabe and the disappearance of her cellphone are also among the circumstances that investigators have examined.
The full sequence of events leading to the couple’s deaths will ultimately form part of the evidence presented during the criminal proceedings.
Families continue to seek justice
The deaths have left both families demanding answers as the criminal case moves through the courts.
Rabe, aged 20, and Pillay, aged 25, were young adults whose disappearance prompted concern from relatives and people who knew them.
Pillay’s family has described him as a mechanic, while people close to the victims have continued to remember them as individuals whose lives were cut short.
The families have attended court proceedings and have called for the legal process to continue.
A campaign calling for justice for the pair has also circulated within the community, with supporters encouraged to attend the upcoming court proceedings.
Bail hearing scheduled for October
The next significant development in the case is the bail proceedings involving the two accused.
A notice circulated by the victims’ supporters states that the next bail hearing is scheduled for Monday, October 5, 2026, at 09:00 at the Boksburg Magistrates’ Court.
The State is opposing bail.
The bail hearing will deal specifically with whether the accused should be released from custody while the criminal case continues.
A decision on bail does not determine whether an accused person is guilty or innocent. The allegations will ultimately have to be dealt with through the criminal proceedings.
Investigation remains ongoing
The deaths of Jessica Rabe and Yudistan Pillay have resulted in a serious criminal investigation in Boksburg, with police and prosecutors continuing to work through the evidence surrounding the case.
The publicly established timeline shows that the couple were reported missing in July, an extensive search followed, and their bodies were recovered from a Van Dyk Park property on August 30.
Two men have since been arrested and charged in connection with the deaths.
The case remains before the Boksburg Magistrates’ Court, where the next stage of the bail proceedings is scheduled to take place on October 5.
The accused remain presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
The investigation and court proceedings are ongoing.
