BREDASDORP – A 73-year-old woman was beaten to death inside her home on Republic Street in Bredasdorp on Monday, 21 September 2026. Police have opened a murder and house robbery case. No arrests have been made.
The victim has been identified as Mariette Mouton. She was found inside the house after her 81-year-old husband, who had been working in the garden at the back of the property, went looking for her.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that Mouton was already deceased when officers arrived. He said she was struck with a blunt object.
Van Wyk said access to the house was gained through a back door that was found unlocked. The husband had been gardening at the rear of the property at the time. He later entered the house, found his wife, and summoned help.
Items were taken from the residence. These included electronic devices, jewellery, a kitchen knife and garden tools.
Bredasdorp police registered both a murder docket and a house robbery docket. The investigation is ongoing. The motive has not been confirmed and the full circumstances of the attack remain under investigation.
Investigators are examining available CCTV footage from the area in an effort to establish a timeline and identify a suspect or suspects. Police said they are following every possible lead.
Cape Agulhas Mayor Raymond Ross said police had briefed him on the progress of the case. He said investigators were following every possible lead.
No suspect has been named and nobody has been arrested.

Bredasdorp is a small coastal town in the Overberg region of the Western Cape, in the Cape Agulhas municipal area. The house is on Republic Street.
The attack took place while the victim was inside the home and her husband was outside at the back of the property. Police have not released a precise time for the incident.
Forensic work and the review of surveillance footage form part of the current investigation. Stolen property is also being traced.

MTI Ponzi scheme liquidator, mother and 13-year-old son found shot dead in Centurion home
Wierdabrug police are investigating the shooting deaths of Mirror Trading International (MTI) joint liquidator Christopher Roos, his mother June, and his 13-year-old son after the three were found with gunshot wounds in a bedroom at a home in Rooihuiskraal North, Centurion.
Police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said the incident occurred on Monday, 21 September 2026. Officers who arrived at the scene found an adult male, an adult female and a 13-year-old boy with apparent gunshot wounds inside a bedroom. Emergency medical services declared all three dead at the scene. A firearm and cartridges were recovered there.
Police have opened two counts of murder and an inquest. No arrests have been made. The investigation is continuing. Police have not disclosed who is believed to have fired the shots, the sequence of events, or a possible motive.
Susan Strydom, legal representative for the liquidator, confirmed that Roos, his mother June and his 13-year-old son had died. She said the family received the news on Monday and had not yet been given further information about what happened. She described Roos as a kind-hearted man.
Roos, also identified in company records as Christopher James Roos, was an insolvency practitioner associated with Sebenza Trust in Centurion. He was reported as 41 years old. He was one of six joint liquidators appointed by the Master of the High Court to the MTI estate.
MTI launched in 2019 and attracted members in South Africa and abroad by promising average monthly returns of about 10 percent, with additional bonuses for recruiting others. Withdrawals were delayed or stopped in late 2020. CEO Johann Steynberg disappeared while travelling in Brazil. The company was placed in provisional liquidation shortly afterwards. A final liquidation order followed. In April 2023 the Western Cape High Court declared MTI a pyramid and Ponzi-type scheme.
Steynberg was later arrested in Brazil. He died in April 2024 while under house arrest awaiting an extradition hearing.
Liquidators have pursued claims against people who operated and benefited from the scheme in South Africa and abroad. According to figures reported from the liquidators, 9,441 claims worth almost R6.5 billion had been submitted. About R588.5 million remained in the estate as of 18 February 2026. Liquidators previously recovered about R1.06 billion after FXChoice froze 1,281 bitcoins in June 2020; those coins were later sold. Additional recoveries through settlements have been reported in the tens of millions of rand. A substantial portion of estate funds has been spent on court cases, inquiries and summonses.
Roos is the second of the six MTI liquidators to die. Fellow liquidator Riaan van Rooyen died on 16 September 2025 after he was found at the bottom of a staircase at his home and taken to hospital. No further public details about the circumstances of Van Rooyen’s death have been disclosed. There is currently no evidence linking Van Rooyen’s death to the Rooihuiskraal North shooting or indicating that the two incidents were connected to the MTI liquidation.
The investigation into the three deaths remains open.
