18 Killed in Toyota Quantum Minibus Explosion on Zimbabwe’s Bulawayo-Beitbridge Highway

A South African-registered Toyota Quantum minibus exploded and caught fire on the Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road in southwest Zimbabwe on Thursday afternoon, killing approximately 18 people.

The incident occurred between 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm local time near the Much Binding area, between Chipangali and the Gwanda tollgate, roughly 20 km from Bulawayo. Police said the vehicle suddenly burst into flames and exploded, destroying the minibus and leaving it as a mangled shell. All passengers on board were killed at the scene.

Authorities reported that one victim’s body was found approximately 100 metres from the wreckage in a wooded area, indicating the force of the blast. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the deaths in an official statement, describing the figure as “+/- 18” or “approximately 18”. Some later updates indicated 16 confirmed fatalities, with DNA testing planned to identify the remains.

The minibus was operating as a commuter taxi on the Bulawayo-Beitbridge route. Reports indicate the passengers were mourners travelling from Nkayi to Gwanda. No survivors have been reported.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause. Early reports noted the extreme severity of the explosion, with authorities suspecting the vehicle may have been carrying gas bottles or other explosives in luggage, though police have not yet released an official determination of the cause.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared a state of disaster in response to the tragedy, with government efforts now focused on coordinating emergency response and support for affected families. Police and emergency services remain at the scene, and motorists have been advised to use a temporary detour as traffic is redirected.

This is the latest in a series of serious road incidents in the region, though full details of the investigation are still pending.

Subsequent Developments and Next Steps

President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared the incident a State of Disaster in terms of Section 27(1) of the Civil Protection Act (Chapter 10:06). The declaration allows the government to mobilise resources and coordinate support for the bereaved families.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police, working with the national army and a bomb squad, have cordoned off the scene and launched a full-scale forensic investigation. A police drone has been deployed to search surrounding bushland for additional remains or debris. Emergency response teams, including the Bulawayo Fire Brigade, police, and military personnel, attended the scene and are continuing recovery and investigation operations.

A temporary one-kilometre detour has been opened around the crash site using Bushtick Road through Sacred Heart and Harare Road near Imbizo into Bulawayo. From Bulawayo, traffic is directed via Harare Road, turning right before the Bulawayo tollgate towards Falcon College and Sacred Heart before rejoining the Beitbridge Road in Esigodini. Motorists have been warned to expect delays of up to four hours on the Bulawayo-Esigodini section of the highway while the area remains sealed for forensic work.

DNA testing will be conducted to identify the victims, as many bodies were burnt beyond recognition or severely dismembered. Preliminary investigations indicate that explosive material carried in the vehicle detonated under unclear circumstances, with fragments suspected to be from explosives recovered a few metres from the wreckage and visible damage to the road surface noted. The vehicle belonged to Best Care Funeral Services of South Africa and was travelling from Bulawayo towards Gwanda.

Investigations into the precise cause of the explosion continue, with authorities expected to release further details as evidence is gathered and analysed.

Three Children Under 15 Shot and Injured in Suspected Gang Retaliation Attack in Bonteheuwel

Bonteheuwel, Cape Flats – Three children, all under the age of 15, were wounded in a drive-by shooting in the A-Block area of Bonteheuwel on Thursday.

According to initial reports, an unknown vehicle drove through the residential area and opened fire near the home of a known gangster. The shooting is believed to be a retaliatory attack linked to the killing of a suspected gang member earlier this week in the same community.

The children were not the intended targets. They were struck by gunfire while in the vicinity and sustained gunshot wounds. Emergency services rushed the three victims to a nearby medical facility, where they are reported to be in stable condition.

Police have confirmed that the incident is under active investigation as a gang-related matter. The suspects fled the scene in the vehicle immediately after the shooting. Law enforcement authorities have launched a manhunt and are appealing to members of the public for any information that could lead to the identification and arrest of those responsible.

No further details about the ages or identities of the children have been released at this stage to protect the victims and the ongoing investigation. Police have not yet disclosed the exact time of the shooting or the make and model of the vehicle involved, citing operational reasons.

This marks the latest reported incident of gun violence in the Cape Flats, where community members continue to express concern over the spillover effects of gang conflicts into residential areas.
