PALMVIEW, KwaZulu-Natal – A ten-year-old boy, a grade four learner at Riverview Primary School in Palmview, suffered a fractured left leg after being struck by a vehicle on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident took place on Swift Palm in the Palmview area. The child ran across the road from behind a stationary vehicle and was hit by a passing car.

The driver of the Cherry Tiggo involved in the collision stated that the boy emerged suddenly from behind the parked vehicle, resulting in the accident.

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) dispatched assistance to the scene at 14:13. The injured child was then transported privately to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital (MGMH) for medical treatment.

The boy is receiving care at the hospital following the incident.

Seven Injured in Multi-Vehicle Collision on R56 Near Pietermaritzburg

A multi-vehicle collision occurred on the R56 in Pietermaritzburg on 11 February 2026 at approximately 16:30. The incident took place near the intersection with Archie Gumede Road.

The collision involved three vehicles: a heavy-duty truck, a double-cab bakkie, and a second bakkie. A head-on collision between the heavy-duty truck and the double-cab bakkie occurred first. The second bakkie then struck the wreckage.

Emergency services responded to the scene, including paramedics from the KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service, the Fire and Rescue Department, and South African Police Service (SAPS) officials.

Two occupants were trapped inside the crumpled double-cab bakkie. One of these patients sustained critical injuries, including severe head trauma and traumatic amputations. The second trapped occupant suffered serious injuries to the head and chest.

Paramedics located another patient in critical condition in the immediate vicinity of the wreckage. Four additional patients were treated for minor injuries.

In total, seven patients were assessed and treated at the scene. Fire and Rescue teams used specialised hydraulic rescue equipment to stabilise the vehicles and extricate the trapped occupants. The presence of the heavy-duty truck and multiple bakkies added complexity to the extrication process.

The R56 was closed to all traffic for several hours while emergency crews cleared the debris field and attended to the injured. All seven patients received on-scene stabilisation before being transported to various medical facilities for further urgent care.

SAPS officials secured the area and are investigating the sequence of events that led to the collision. No further details on the cause have been released at this time.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes until the road reopens.
