Johannesburg, South Africa – Authorities have announced the recovery of a vehicle linked to the targeted killing of Marius van der Merwe, who was also known by the identifier #WitnessD. The vehicle was found in Alexandra township, marking a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the crime.
Marius van der Merwe, a former police reservist and security boss, testified at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry under the alias Witness D. The commission is investigating allegations of corruption and misconduct within the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department. During his testimony, van der Merwe made revelations about an extrajudicial killing and police involvement in corrupt activities. He also exposed connections to illegal mining operations.
Van der Merwe was shot and killed outside his home in Brakpan on the evening of December 5, 2025. The attack occurred in front of his wife, with assailants using an AK-47 rifle. CCTV footage captured van der Merwe speaking to his attackers and attempting to draw his own firearm before being fatally wounded. This was the second attempt on his life within two weeks. The killing took place less than three weeks after his testimony at the commission.
Hours before his death, van der Merwe sent a voice note detailing his efforts to expose state officials involved in illegal activities. Forensic investigators examined the scene where his body was found covered in a space blanket.
The incident involves the use of the vehicle in the commission of the killing, which investigators have described as targeted. Law enforcement officials confirmed that the recovery occurred in Alexandra township, a densely populated area northeast of Johannesburg’s city center.
