Two South African Police Service officers died in a shooting incident at Nkowankowa police station outside Tzaneen in Limpopo province on Monday morning, 8 December 2025.
According to police reports, a male officer fatally shot a female colleague with his service firearm before turning the weapon on himself. Both officers were declared dead at the scene. The incident took place inside the station premises, and no other officers or members of the public were injured.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the shooting followed an argument between the two officers. Authorities have stated that a domestic-related dispute is suspected to have played a role in the altercation.
Limpopo police have opened a murder docket as well as an inquest docket to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Forensic teams and detectives are examining the scene, reviewing witness statements from other officers who were on duty, and analysing all available evidence.
The identities of the deceased officers are being withheld until their next of kin have been formally notified.
Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, provincial police spokesperson, confirmed the sequence of events and stated that investigators are working to establish the full timeline and contributing factors.
No additional suspects are being sought, as evidence indicates the incident was confined to the two officers involved.
The South African Police Service has described the event as a tragic loss and says the investigation remains ongoing. Further details will be released as they become available.
