Durban – A head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a small private vehicle claimed two lives and left 17 people injured on Wednesday afternoon, 26 November 2025, on the M4 near the Jacobs hostel in the Mlazi area.

The crash occurred shortly before 5 pm on the M4 inbound carriageway, directly opposite the entrance to the Jacobs hostel. Emergency services confirmed that the two vehicles collided while travelling in opposite directions.

Paramedics from Netcare 911, ER24, and KwaZulu-Natal VIP Medics responded to the scene. Upon arrival, they found the small car extensively damaged and the minibus taxi off the roadway. Two occupants of the private vehicle – the driver and a passenger – were declared dead at the scene.

Seventeen other people sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious. Sixteen of the injured were passengers from the minibus taxi, while one additional occupant from the small car was also hurt. All injured patients were stabilised on scene before being transported to nearby hospitals for further medical care.

The M4 was closed in both directions for several hours while emergency personnel worked at the scene and the wreckage was cleared. Traffic was heavily affected in the area until the roadway was reopened later that evening.

KwaZulu-Natal police have registered a case of culpable homicide and an investigation into the exact cause of the collision is underway. No further details regarding the identities of the deceased or the injured have been released at this stage.

Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution on the M4, particularly during peak afternoon traffic periods.
