MODIMOLLE, Limpopo – A severe multi-vehicle collision on the N1 highway, approximately 7 km south of Modimolle near the Kranskop Toll Plaza, resulted in multiple fatalities and serious injuries on Friday evening, November 28, 2025.

The incident unfolded around 18:15 SAST, when a distress call alerted emergency services to a chaotic scene involving entrapments and a potential vehicle fire. The crash involved several vehicles, leading to a high-concern fatal scene with confirmed deaths on site.

Paramedics from Netcare 911 and ER24 responded immediately, deploying advanced life support units to the location. Fire and rescue teams, along with South African Police Service (SAPS) Traffic officers, were mobilized to assist with extrication efforts and to secure the area amid the hazardous conditions.

The collision caused extensive disruptions to traffic flow. Both directions of the N1 were obstructed, with the northbound lane fully closed and the southbound lane completely blocked. The shutdown extended from the Mookgophong offramp (Exit 298) to Modimolle, resulting in standstill conditions and tailbacks stretching approximately 8 to 12 km in both lanes. Initial attempts to implement contraflow systems proved unsuccessful due to the severity of the wreckage.

Emergency crews worked through the evening to stabilize the situation, treating multiple individuals for serious injuries at the scene before transporting them to nearby medical facilities. The exact number of vehicles involved and the precise sequence of events remain under investigation by SAPS Traffic authorities.

This incident marks a somber reminder of the dangers on South Africa’s major highways, particularly during peak travel periods. Motorists were advised to seek alternative routes, including the R101 between Mookgophong and Modimolle, while clearance operations continued late into the night. Further updates on the investigation and road status are expected from provincial transport officials in the coming days.
