Heidelberg, Gauteng – Tragedy struck the R23 road between Heidelberg and Balfour in the early hours of Friday, 29 November 2025, when a head-on collision between a heavy motor vehicle and a light motor vehicle claimed the lives of three people.

The fatal accident occurred approximately 17 kilometres outside Heidelberg, turning a normally busy stretch of road into a scene of devastation. Emergency services received the call shortly after dawn and rushed to the site, where they found both vehicles extensively damaged and occupants trapped.

Despite the rapid response from Lesedi Fire and Rescue, Gauteng Provincial Government Emergency Medical Services and Lesedi Traffic Department, paramedics could only confirm that three people – the occupants of the light motor vehicle – had died at the scene. No further injuries were reported from the heavy vehicle at this stage.

The exact cause of the collision is still under investigation, but early indications point to the dangerous combination of speed, possible fatigue and the narrow carriageway that characterises parts of this route. The R23 has earned a grim reputation over recent years, with multiple fatal crashes prompting residents and regular commuters to repeatedly label it one of Gauteng’s deadliest roads.

Traffic was heavily disrupted for several hours while emergency crews worked to clear the wreckage and investigators processed the scene. Motorists travelling between Heidelberg and Balfour were advised to use alternative routes or expect long delays.

Authorities have once again appealed to drivers to exercise extreme caution, especially with the festive season approaching and traffic volumes expected to increase significantly in the coming weeks. Basic road-safety reminders include maintaining safe following distances, avoiding driving while tired, and strictly adhering to speed limits.

The families of the deceased have been notified, and formal identification processes are underway.

Our deepest condolences go out to everyone affected by this heartbreaking incident. May the souls of those who lost their lives rest in eternal peace.

Motorists are reminded that every journey matters – arrive alive.
