Three Arrested in Attempted Bribery Incident in Nelson Mandela Bay

GQEBERHA – Authorities in Nelson Mandela Bay have detained three individuals on bribery charges following an encounter with police on the N2 highway.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, around 7:30 PM, when members of the District Crime Combatting Unit received a tip about a white Nissan Magnite heading from Port Alfred toward Gqeberha with mismatched registration plates. Officers quickly located and stopped the vehicle near the Coega Industrial Area.

During the stop, police discovered that the vehicle’s plates and license disc did not align with its details. As the investigation proceeded, the occupants allegedly offered officers R19,500 in cash to avoid further action. The officers reported the attempt to their commander and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, which oversaw the response.

The arrested suspects include a 33-year-old man and two women, aged 47 and 54. They were taken into custody on bribery charges, and the vehicle was seized for additional examination.

The reason behind the bribery attempt is still unclear. The trio is set to face charges in the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court in the coming days.

This arrest underscores the South African Police Service’s ongoing efforts to uphold transparency, accountability, and legal standards in law enforcement.
