Gauteng Provincial Government Launches Investigation into Alleged 3.8 Terabyte Data Breach Claimed by Threat Actor XP95

The Gauteng Provincial Government is investigating claims of a major data breach affecting its systems. A threat actor using the name XP95 states it stole 3.8 terabytes of data, equal to 3,673,556 individual files.

The compromised material includes high-resolution copies of identity documents, passports and curricula vitae belonging to people who submitted personal information to the provincial government, including details linked to job applications. To support its claim, XP95 published a 1.8 gigabyte sample of the stolen files online and shared further samples on its Telegram channel.

The group, described as a new Ransomware-as-a-Service operation that surfaced in early March 2026, has placed the complete dataset for sale on its dark web leak site at a price of US$25,000. It has not claimed to have encrypted any systems and is instead offering the exfiltrated data for purchase.

Forensic review by cybersecurity firm Darknotify points to the breach originating from an isolated internal scanner server that was connected directly to the internet.

The Gauteng Provincial Government has confirmed it has opened a preliminary investigation. Spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga said the matter is being handled with the required seriousness, that internal security measures have been activated and that the relevant authorities are assisting.

Premier Panyaza Lesufi has stated that the government is dealing with the situation. Mhlanga added that it would be premature to comment on specific details while the investigation continues and that further information will be released when available.

The claims became public in mid-March 2026 and have drawn attention from cybersecurity analysts. The Gauteng Provincial Government has not yet issued a full technical report or confirmed the exact extent of any compromise.

Two Suspects Killed in Police Shootout in KwaNgcolosi After String of Family Murders

KwaNgcolosi, KwaZulu-Natal – Two men have been killed during a confrontation with KZN police in the early hours of this morning.

One of the deceased, believed to be approximately 24 years old, was the main suspect wanted in connection with multiple murders in the area. The second man was his accomplice.

Police located both suspects at a rondavel. When officers confronted them, the two men allegedly opened fire. A shootout followed, resulting in the deaths of both suspects. Two firearms were recovered at the scene. No police members were injured.

The main suspect had been linked to a series of killings, including the deaths of family members. A few days ago, a grandmother and a young girl were shot dead while in their beds at home. Another person present during the attack survived with injuries.

Investigations revealed that the suspect had also targeted his own relatives. He believed his father’s death was connected to witchcraft. The first family member he killed was an aunt, who was stabbed to death. This was followed by the stabbing death of an uncle.

The young girl killed in the recent shooting at the family home had been a witness to the aunt’s murder. In addition, the suspect – who was known to associate with local criminals – recently contacted another uncle by phone and told him that his days were numbered.

The incidents form part of an ongoing investigation into the killings in the KwaNgcolosi area.
