Private security vehicle reverses into pedestrian in Johannesburg suburb

Johannesburg — A short CCTV video showing a private security SUV reversing at speed and striking a female pedestrian has gone viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage and questions about driver negligence.

The 23-second clip, which began circulating on X on 24 March 2026, shows the dark-coloured SUV (bearing what appear to be private security company markings) on a quiet residential street. A woman wearing a bright pink/red top is walking ahead of the vehicle when it suddenly reverses and knocks her down. The driver stops immediately, and at least one occupant exits to check on her. The pedestrian is seen on the ground but no further details about her injuries are visible.

Social media users have speculated the vehicle belongs to a firm such as CAP Security (based on visible contact numbers and livery), but this has not been confirmed by any official source. No arrests or charges have been publicly announced.

The CAP Team is aware of a video circulating on social media showing a troubling incident involving one of our security vehicles which occurred on 16 March 2026 in a residential area Glensan.

We are deeply distressed by what has occurred.

Our primary concern is for the wellbeing of the woman involved, and we extend our sincere apologies to her and her family during what is undoubtedly a traumatic time.

Senior CAP executives reached out to the family on the day of the incident and have held several conversations since.

CAP is fully committed to supporting them through this process.

As soon as we became aware of this incident, we immediately instituted an internal investigation.

There is no evidence that the incident was intentional – it resulted purely from human error – but due to the severity, the staff member responsible for the incident has been dismissed.

This is not who we are and this incident falls far short of the standards we uphold.

As an organisation entrusted with protecting lives and communities, we are devastated that a careless act by one of our own has caused harm to someone.

CAP deploys hundreds of officers in vehicles every day, who drive millions of kilometers a year to keep communities all over Johannesburg safe.

We have multiple procedures in place to ensure the safety of our people, our external stakeholders, and any member of the public we encounter.

Following this occurrence, we are conducting a thorough review of all our operational protocols and driver conduct policies to ensure that additional lessons are learnt and that any additional safeguards possible are implemented to prevent an incident of this nature from ever happening again.

We deeply regret this incident and remain committed to crime prevention and protecting our communities.

At the time of publishing, neither the South African Police Service (SAPS) nor Johannesburg Metro Police (JMPD) have issued a statement. There is also no confirmed information on the woman’s identity, medical condition, or whether a case has been opened.

Female Lawyer Fatally Shot Outside CCMA in Johannesburg CBD

Johannesburg, 23 March 2026 – A 35-year-old woman believed to be a lawyer was shot dead at approximately 9am on Monday morning at the corner of Fox and Joubert streets in the Johannesburg Central Business District.

The incident occurred outside the offices of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), near the magistrate’s court. The victim had parked her vehicle in a nearby lot and was walking towards the CCMA building when she was attacked.

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed that officers responded to the scene and found the woman suffering from gunshot wounds. She was declared dead on arrival. Preliminary police reports state that the deceased was allegedly followed by two unknown suspects who opened fire before fleeing the scene on foot. No arrests have been made, and a murder case has been opened. The motive for the attack forms part of the ongoing investigation.

Eyewitnesses at the scene described the shooting as a targeted attack carried out in broad daylight and in full public view. One witness, Pontsho Mahlangu, told reporters that the victim was exiting her car and heading to the CCMA when a gunman approached her at close range and fired three shots to her head. Another nearby witness reported hearing four gunshots. The assailant, described by witnesses as a black male, fled immediately on foot and was seen running across the street toward a waiting vehicle.

The area was cordoned off for several hours as forensic teams processed the scene. Traffic was diverted, and crowds gathered at a distance while investigations continued. The victim’s body was removed by a forensic pathology vehicle shortly after midday.

Reports indicate the victim was a familiar figure in the area and had visited the CCMA offices on multiple occasions to assist employees with labour-related matters, including cases of unpaid wages and unfair dismissals. Security company Vision Tactical stated that she had parked and was en route to the CCMA when the shooting took place.

Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact their nearest station or the Crime Stop line on 08600 10111. The victim’s full identity has not yet been officially released by authorities.

This incident marks another violent attack in the Johannesburg city centre, with SAPS continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

KZN Police Chief Presents Prison Letter to Parliament Claiming Businessman Transported Furniture to Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala Farm

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has handed over a handwritten letter from a former prisoner to Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee. The letter alleges that businessman Vusimuzi Cat Matlala told his former cellmate he had delivered furniture, including couches, to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala farm in Limpopo.

The eight-page letter was written by Jermaine Prim, who shared a cell with Matlala at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Facility. According to the document, Matlala described himself as very close to the Ramaphosa family and spoke about transporting items to the property.

Phala Phala farm is the site of a 2020 burglary in which a large amount of foreign currency, reportedly hidden inside furniture, was stolen. The break-in triggered investigations into possible money laundering, undeclared cash holdings and claims of interference by law enforcement officials. The case has not been finalised and continues to face court challenges. Independent Police Investigative Directorate reports linked to the matter were declassified only recently.

Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi tabled the letter during his testimony to the parliamentary committee. He told members that the contents amount to unverified hearsay and still require proper investigation. He added that some information in the letter matches details from earlier intelligence gathered by police.

The commissioner also highlighted problems with prison management at the time, saying oversight failures allowed Matlala access to freedoms not normally granted to inmates.

The Presidency has issued no statement on the specific claims contained in the letter.

Opposition parties have demanded immediate steps to verify the information in the document. They have warned that any confirmation of the claims could introduce new elements to the long-running Phala Phala matter that has affected the president since the 2020 incident.
