The collision caused significant destruction, leaving a community in mourning and emergency services scrambling to respond.

Emergency medical teams arrived to a scene of widespread damage. Five individuals, including a 13-year-old child in critical condition, two adults, a six-month-old infant, and the tanker driver, had already been transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment. The 13-year-old was extricated from the wreckage prior to the arrival of additional crews.

Rescue operations continued as two people remained unaccounted for. The Pietermaritzburg Fire Department and SAPS Search and Rescue teams led an extensive extrication effort. After two hours of searching, rescuers recovered the body of a six-year-old child trapped beneath the debris. Two hours later, the body of an adult female was found in the rubble.
