Germiston, Gauteng – On April 25, 2025, a targeted intelligence operation in Germiston culminated in the arrest of four Ethiopian nationals for operating illegal gambling machines. The raid, executed by a coalition of law enforcement agencies, resulted in the seizure of 28 unauthorized gambling devices, striking a blow against illicit gambling in Gauteng.
The operation saw collaboration between the Gauteng Provincial Head Office Firearms Liquor and Second Hand Goods (FLASH) unit, the Gauteng Gambling Board, Gauteng Traffic Police, and Gauteng Traffic Wardens. The suspects face charges under the Gauteng Gambling Act, Act 4 of 1995, for possession and distribution of illegal gambling equipment.
“This successful operation reflects our commitment to rooting out illegal activities that undermine community safety and economic integrity,” said Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, a spokesperson for the operation. Authorities emphasized that illegal gambling often fuels broader criminal networks, making such raids critical for public welfare.
The confiscated machines, which bypass regulatory oversight, deprive the state of revenue and pose risks like addiction and exploitation. The Gauteng Gambling Board reiterated its focus on enforcing compliance to protect residents and ensure gambling revenue supports public services.
The suspects are due to appear in court soon, with investigations ongoing to uncover potential links to larger networks. Residents are urged to report suspicious gambling activities to Captain Tintswalo Sibeko at 082 947 8770.
This raid underscores the power of inter-agency cooperation and intelligence-driven policing in tackling illegal gambling, setting a precedent for future enforcement efforts in Gauteng.
