Durban, 6 April 2025 – A devastating accident on the N2 Northbound near the NPC Cement Factory in KwaZulu-Natal left two people dead and ten others injured on Sunday afternoon. The collision, which involved five vehicles, occurred around 4:00 PM, sending shockwaves through the local community and highlighting ongoing concerns about road safety on this busy highway.
According to ALS Paramedics Medical Services, the crash resulted in significant chaos, with two vehicles overturning multiple times. Among the victims was a six-year-old boy, tragically killed in the incident, and an elderly man in his fifties, who suffered severe injuries and went into cardiac arrest at the scene. Despite efforts to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead. The young boy’s death has particularly struck a chord, with South Africans expressing horror at the loss of such a young life.
Paramedics quickly established a triage system to manage the crisis, calling for additional ambulances to assist. Approximately ten individuals sustained injuries ranging from serious to critical. Advanced Life Support Paramedics stabilized the wounded on-site before transporting them to nearby Durban hospitals for urgent care. The scene was described as harrowing, with passengers, many of whom were children, ejected from vehicles onto the freeway.
Garrith Jamieson, spokesperson for ALS Paramedics, noted the complexity of the response due to the scale of the wreckage. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the collision, which remains unclear at this stage. Authorities are examining factors such as road conditions, vehicle speeds, and potential driver error.
The N2 Northbound was temporarily closed to allow emergency services to clear the scene and ensure the safety of motorists. This incident adds to a troubling series of fatal crashes in KwaZulu-Natal since the start of 2025, prompting renewed calls for stricter traffic enforcement and public awareness campaigns.
Local officials have urged drivers to exercise caution on the N2, a critical artery for both commercial and passenger traffic. The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance on South Africa’s highways. SAPS is expected to release further details as the investigation progresses.
