A pedestrian died after being struck by a tractor on Petrus Stroom Road in Howick on the afternoon of 9 February 2026.
Midlands EMS Howick crews were dispatched to the scene at approximately 16:27 following reports of a serious collision involving a tractor and a pedestrian. Upon arrival, paramedics found the pedestrian lying on the roadway in a critical condition.
Emergency personnel immediately provided advanced medical care. CPR was started, and extensive resuscitation efforts continued on scene, with bystanders assisting the Midlands EMS teams. Despite these interventions, the pedestrian’s condition deteriorated further, and the individual was declared deceased at the scene.
Authorities attended the incident and secured the area for further investigation into the circumstances of the collision.
No further details about the identities of the pedestrian or the tractor operator have been released at this stage. The incident remains under investigation.
Body of 27-Year-Old Woman Found in Shallow Grave on Farm Near Bloemfontein; 34-Year-Old Suspect Arrested
Bloemfontein, Free State – Police in the Free State have exhumed the decomposed remains of a 27-year-old woman from a shallow grave on a farm homestead in the Kloofeind area, outside Bloemfontein. The discovery took place on Monday, 9 February 2026.
The farm is situated along the N8 National Road between Bloemfontein and Petrusburg. Police crime scene experts began arriving at the property from as early as 10:00 that morning to carry out the exhumation.
The 34-year-old suspect, a farm worker employed on the property, pointed out the location of the shallow grave. Crime intelligence, which included information about the suspect’s alleged visit to a sangoma, guided investigators to the scene.
Police statements identify the victim as the girlfriend of the arrested man. Her remains were found in a decomposed state.
Timeline of Events
The suspect had reported the woman missing since Saturday, 17 January 2026. A missing person file was opened and registered on Friday, 30 January 2026, at Parkweg Police Station. In his statement, the suspect claimed the woman had left the farm to visit her aunt in the Pieter Swarts area of Bloemspruit. This information was later found to be false.
After the exhumation on 9 February, police arrested the 34-year-old farm worker on the same day. A case docket for murder and defeating the ends of justice was opened at Parkweg Police Station.
The suspect is due to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 11 February 2026.

South African Police Service investigators used a combination of crime intelligence and direct verification at the scene. The body was located and recovered soon after the missing person inquiry was formally opened. No details on the exact cause of death have been released, pending forensic examination.

Limpopo Police Arrest 966 Suspects and Recover Firearms in Week-Long Operations
LIMPOPO – Police in Limpopo province conducted coordinated high-density visible policing operations across the province from 2 February to 8 February, resulting in the arrest of 966 suspects on various criminal charges.
The operations formed part of intensified efforts to curb crime through a strong and visible police presence in communities. During the seven-day period, officers also recovered eight firearms and five rounds of ammunition.
The seizure of these weapons forms part of ongoing work to remove illegal firearms from circulation in communities and to improve public safety.
All 966 arrested suspects have already appeared before various magistrates’ courts in different parts of the province.
The results reflect the direct outcomes of the focused policing strategy deployed during the specified period.
