Nigerian National Fatally Shot During Anti-Drug Operation in Johannesburg

A foreign national from Nigeria was fatally shot on Sunday night during an anti-drug operation in the Windsor area of Johannesburg. The incident took place in the context of a drug raid, with ActionSA’s Ekurhuleni mayoral candidate Xolani Khumalo present at the scene.

ActionSA confirmed the details of the shooting in an official statement. The party reported that the deceased was a Nigerian suspect allegedly involved in drug trafficking activities. The shooting occurred while the operation was underway and Khumalo was participating.

In response to the event, ActionSA defended its involvement in crime-fighting initiatives. The party highlighted the severe impact of drug syndicates on local communities, which have faced ongoing threats from violence, intimidation, and open defiance of the law.

ActionSA stated that it would back all lawful and firm actions aimed at breaking up these criminal networks. “For too long, drug syndicates have terrorised our communities through violence, intimidation, and total disregard for the law. ActionSA will continue to support every decisive and lawful measure to dismantle this scourge and confront the violent resistance of criminals who have grown comfortable believing they are untouchable. That era must end.”

The party linked the operation directly to its broader efforts to improve safety in Ekurhuleni. This forms part of the organisation’s 10-Point Action Plan to Fix Ekurhuleni, which gives priority to strengthening law enforcement and community protection.

Specific measures in the plan include overhauling the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) to improve its effectiveness, creating specialised units focused on breaking up drug syndicates and gangs in known crime hotspots, rolling out crime-mapping technology and advanced detection systems, and building stronger Community Policing Forums to encourage local involvement in safety initiatives.

Police have opened an investigation into the circumstances of the shooting, and inquiries are continuing. No further details on the exact sequence of events have been released at this stage.

The fatal shooting has drawn attention to the intense challenges posed by drug-related crime in parts of Johannesburg and the determination of political figures and parties to tackle these issues through direct action. Authorities continue to examine all available evidence as the case proceeds.

The four intercepted trucks remain parked at the mine, as there are no suitable storage facilities available at this time. Police have confirmed that investigations are continuing and that further arrests have not been ruled out.
