Hijacking and Robbery in Chatsworth, KwaZulu-Natal

A white Kia H100 bakkie bearing the registration number CK 68 NB ZN was hijacked in Havenside, Chatsworth, on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.

Three suspects confronted the driver on Havenside Drive. One of the suspects brandished a knife and threatened the driver, leading to the robbery of a Samsung cellphone, R600 in cash, the driver’s licence, and a bank card.

The victim received minor injuries, consisting of several scratches to his arm.

The suspects then fled the scene in the hijacked vehicle.

In the period from April 2024 to March 2025, 102,000 individuals aged 16 and older experienced hijacking of motor vehicles, representing a victimization rate of 0.2% and 119,000 incidences. This figure increased from 81,000 individuals in the previous year. Weapons were used in 72.5% of these hijacking incidences, with guns involved in 94.2% of weapon-related cases.

From July to December 2024, hijackings comprised 56% of all vehicle crime incidents nationally. Over the last five years, the number of reported hijackings has increased by 53%. In the first quarter of 2025, there were 4,533 reported carjackings, down from 5,338 in the same period of 2024.

For street robberies in the period from April 2024 to March 2025, 470,000 individuals aged 16 and older were victims, with a victimization rate of 1.1% and 529,000 incidences. This increased from 443,000 individuals in the previous year. Weapons were used in 80.1% of street robbery incidences, with knives in 52.1% and guns in 51.8%.

In the same period, 213,000 households experienced home robberies, representing 1.1% of households and 259,000 incidences. Weapons were involved in 57.8% of home robbery incidences, including guns in 71.1% and knives in 30.3%.
