Durban – 13 February 2026 – Newly released CCTV footage has detailed the moments before a multi-vehicle collision on the N3 highway at Shongweni that resulted in three deaths and several injuries.
The crash occurred on Friday 16 January 2026, shortly after 9:30am, on the Durban-bound carriageway of the N3 between the M13 bridge and the Shongweni off-ramp in KwaZulu-Natal.
According to the footage, a bakkie was travelling in the fast lane on the westbound section of the highway, heading towards Pietermaritzburg. A second vehicle followed closely behind it.
The following vehicle then overtook on the left, passing a third vehicle in the centre lane. As it attempted to move back into the fast lane, it clipped the bakkie.
The impact caused the bakkie to lose control. It crossed the centre median and entered the eastbound lanes, where it collided head-on with a truck travelling towards Durban.
The force of the collision caused both vehicles to catch fire. The truck jackknifed and was pushed across the carriageway, coming to rest in a ditch on the Pietermaritzburg-bound side of the highway, about 100 metres from the road. It narrowly missed other vehicles in the area.
All three occupants of the bakkie were killed. Two were burned beyond recognition inside the vehicle, while the third was ejected during the impact and declared dead at the scene by paramedics.
The truck driver sustained minor scratches.
The collision displaced concrete barriers on the side of the road, which struck five construction workers from WBHO who were on duty nearby. The workers suffered moderate to minor injuries and were taken to hospital.
Emergency services remained on scene for several hours to extinguish the fires and clear the wreckage. The Durban-bound lanes were closed during this time.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport has confirmed the details of the incident. The Road Traffic Inspectorate is continuing its investigation.

The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his body and was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. According to reports the victim was walking in the street, when a light blue Ford Fiesta stopped next to him. One of the occupants of the vehicle got out and opened fire on the victim before fleeing the scene.”
The motive for the attack is still under investigation and has not been established.
