Mohlakeng, West Rand – 4 February 2026

A cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery involving the use of explosives occurred on the R28 highway in Mohlakeng, West Rand, Gauteng, on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident took place at approximately 16:41 on the R28 between Ngqonyela Street and the R559.

Reports from multiple security and traffic monitoring sources describe the event as an armed robbery accompanied by explosions, consistent with a CIT heist where explosives are used to gain access to the vehicle.

Police are on the scene and responding to the situation.

Motorists are strongly advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes to prevent congestion or potential risks.

No further details on injuries, suspects, or the amount involved have been confirmed at this time. Authorities have not released an official statement, and the situation remains active.

This follows a pattern of CIT attacks in Gauteng, where such robberies often involve coordinated groups and explosives.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

Six Killed, 18 Injured in Shooting Ambush on Taxi Near Meyerton

MEYERTON, Gauteng – A minibus taxi travelling from Johannesburg to Lesotho came under sudden attack on the R59 highway near Meyerton on Tuesday afternoon, February 3, 2026, resulting in six fatalities and 18 people wounded.

The victims, all Lesotho nationals, included four women and two men among the deceased. The 18 survivors sustained gunshot wounds and injuries from the vehicle overturning; they are receiving treatment in hospital.

Gauteng Deputy Provincial Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana, who addressed the media at the scene, described the incident as an unprovoked shooting. A white Nissan Juke, reported stolen in Witbank in September 2025, approached the minibus and its three occupants opened fire. The taxi driver attempted to evade the attackers by pushing their vehicle off the road, which caused the Nissan Juke to lose control.

The suspects exited their vehicle, crossed a small bridge on foot, and hijacked a Datsun GO from a woman in the area. They fled in the hijacked car, but it ended up in a ditch in the Kliprivier area. Police, assisted by K9 units, drones, helicopters, Public Order Policing, Kliprivier Visible Policing, Midvaal Traffic Department, Midvaal peace officers, and private security, tracked and arrested all three suspects – also Lesotho nationals.

Major General Kekana confirmed that the arrests followed a coordinated operation after officers encountered the hijacked woman and initiated a pursuit. Forensic teams remain at the scene processing evidence, including recovering firearms.

The suspects face charges of six counts of murder, 18 counts of attempted murder, carjacking, and possession of a hijacked motor vehicle. They are expected to appear in court shortly.

Investigations continue to establish the full circumstances of the attack. No motive has been publicly disclosed.

N2 Northbound Closed in Durban After Cash-in-Transit Robbery and Explosion

Durban – The northbound carriageway of the N2 highway remains closed between Edwin Swales Drive (M7 interchange) and Spaghetti Junction due to an active crime scene following a cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery on Monday evening, 2 February 2026.

The incident occurred around 7:00 PM near Chesterville, just outside Durban CBD, on the N2 heading towards Umhlanga, shortly after Spaghetti Junction. According to reports from emergency services, the CIT vehicle was bombed twice during the robbery attempt, resulting in an explosion that scattered cash across the roadway.

Following the blast, hundreds of people—including residents from nearby informal settlements, passing motorists, and others—began looting the scattered money from the road and roadside. South African Police Service (SAPS) officers intervened quickly, dispersing the looters and securing the area to establish a crime scene.

Advanced Life Support (ALS) paramedics were called to the scene once it was declared safe by police. Paramedics treated two security personnel who were inside the CIT vehicle at the time of the explosion. One guard suffered minor to moderate injuries and was stabilized on site before being transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment. No fatalities or additional injuries have been reported.

The explosion and subsequent looting prompted SAPS and Durban Metro Police to close the affected section of the N2 northbound. No traffic is permitted through the area, and motorists are advised to avoid the route entirely while investigations continue. Law enforcement and emergency services remain on scene.

The robbery and related events are under investigation by SAPS, with no arrests confirmed at this stage. Further details are expected as the probe progresses.

This closure has significant implications for traffic flow in the Durban area, as the N2 is a key national freeway connecting the city to surrounding regions. Updates on the road’s reopening will depend on the completion of forensic and investigative work at the site.
